There was a cute novelty song back in the 60s called "She Can't Find Her keys." In the song the young girl was pictured as pulling everything out of her pocket but her keys. She kept saying, "just a moment please, I can't find my keys." Truth be told, yesterday I was that girl. I had gone with a friend to purchase some flowers and tomatoes for my pots. Pretty ones that Lord willing will show forth His glory all season. I stood at the door going through the pockets of my coat. Several things in there, but only the other set of keys that can open many things, but not the door. All was not lost though because I knew who to call. I had given a friend who is usually home, a spare key; so, the problem was soon remedied. To say that I felt foolish for having made this mistake would be true.
How could I have left the other set of keys in my purse? I went on for a bit talking to myself.
Then another thought came to me. Why was I surprised that I could make a mistake? Why didn't I just let it go? After all, if someone else makes a mistake, do I act surprised and ask them how they could possibly do that? No, so I needed to give myself the same grace. So, I asked the Lord to redeem the little incident, and this morning, my thoughts turned in a different direction when considering keys. Not the kind that opens physical doors but the kind that unlocks truth about God. The keys each one of us who belongs to Jesus has been given. What are we to do with them? We are to be ready to share them with anyone whose lack of understanding makes him feel locked away from God.
Let's think for a moment about the precious treasure God has entrusted to us. We know that God loves us, John 3:16. We also know that that same love causes the Lord to long for everyone to be saved, 2 Peter 3:9. Even though He knows that many will never come to Him, Revelation 20:11-15.
1. We know that God created everything out of nothing, and that all that He created was very good, Genesis 1:31.
2. We know that God knows everything, has all power and is present everywhere, Psalm 139:1-12.
3. We know that God not only will not but that He cannot lie, Titus 1:2.
4. We know that God has a kingdom over which He will rule, and that He will make all things new, Revelation 21-22.
And the list could go on and on. We have the keys that unlock the answers to the most profound questions people have about their identity, their need to belong and their need to make a difference. How blessed we are because of God's kindness toward us. The Lord has entrusted great riches to us, Matthew 13:45-46. What a privilege we have considering who we are. In 2 Corinthians 4:7, we are reminded that we are simple clay pots. Yes, we are those who are prone to making mistakes, and we all sin, Romans 3:23. Yet God has honored us by allowing us to hold out His precious truth keys when people need relief from the lies and uncertainty that is all around them.
In 1 Corinthians 4:7, God has more to tell us about who we truly are. We are like each other. Whether our list of accomplishments is long or whether it would fit on a post-it note, we have no reason to boast. All we have comes from the benevolence of God. We have nothing in which we can glory because all that we possess is given to us by God. The fact that we could pick up a cup of coffee or walk across the room is because God allowed it to be so. If we have been given great gifts or if we believe that we have few outstanding abilities, we are debtors to the One Who put us together, Psalm 139:13-16.
God has yet one other reminder about us. We are dust, Psalm 103:14. Mere human beings, and yet, He has entrusted us with an awesome responsibility. To hold out the truth keys about Him. Someone might say that it seems to be a rare thing for anyone to want to hear truth. That might be true. Yet, by our lives and because people know that we love Jesus, they know where to find the truth. Just as I knew who to call when I needed to get into the house. The one with whom I had entrusted the key.
My husband used to tell me that though his co-workers didn't seem interested in hearing about the Lord; sometimes if there were a need, they might ask for prayer. They knew he carried the key. God be glorified. All the Lord asks us is that we will be ready when someone asks for the precious truth we carry, 1 Peter 3:15. In 2 Kings 22:12-20, we meet Hulda. When King Josiah needed to know an answer to his important question, Hulda had the privilege of telling the king what would happen. This is the only time she is spoken of in the scriptures, but she faithfully held out God's truth when she was consulted, and her message was received and action was taken.
Lord, help us to be like Hulda. Faithfully holding out the truth we have entrusted to us.
